Appointed 4th Sergeant of Co. I, 2nd Regiment, 1st Brigade, Georgia State Troops on Oct. 12, 1861. Mustered out of service in April, 1862. Elected 2nd Lieutenant on May 5, 1862. Died at Vicksburg, Miss. in 1863. RCS 5-932, Mid 1800 People, p.35.

RUTLAND, HENRY F. - CO. D, 57TH GA. INFANTRY, 4TH CORPORAL6
Born on Jan. 7, 1840 in Georgia, son of Wiley and Permelia Chewning Rutland. Died on July 21, 1930. Married Annie E. Perry (Feb. 20, 1851 - Dec. 15, 1942), daughter of Edward and Eliza Lee Perry. Buried in Northview Cemetery. Enlisted on May 3, 1862. "Smith Guards" (Wilkinson County). Appointed 4th Corporal. Captured at Vicksburg, Miss. on July 4, 1863. Paroled on July 15, 1863. In ill health in 1863 and 1864. He was in Newberry, S.C. returning to his company when the war ended. Drew pension 1914-1930. 1907, 1910, 1911, 1915, 1919, 1924 Tax List, Northview, p. 21, 332, RCS 5-955, Wilkinson Collections, pp. 140, 153, Pension Book 3, 4.
